We are back from a two week holiday/vacation in Northumberland. We have gone for the last 4 years, and we stay in the same holiday cottage every year. Before having the children my husband and I never went to the same place twice, now we appreciate not having any surprises. I am always surprised how few people choose to holiday up there. When neighbours ask where we are headed for the summer holidays and we tell them Northumberland, their eyes glaze over. It seems distant, bland, and cold.
How wrong they are! Being in the rain shadow of the Pennines it is one of the driest counties in England. The temperatures aren't as high as the Southeast, of course, but they pretty closely match Cornwall. It's about a 5 hour drive up there, same as Cornwall. And once you get there- wow! It's rugged, empty and full of blue sky. The beaches are sandy, windswept and always with a photogenic castle on the headland. We are an outdoors-y family and enjoy all the opportunities to walk, bike, and just mess around on the beach. As an American, I love the romance of the place. It is loaded with castles, ruined monasteries, Norman churches, lonely lighthouses, and fields full of ripening grain rolling out to the coast. Fabulous. It's also a real bargain compared to the Southwest.
I don't know if I will be able to read through all the posts that sewing bloggers have made over the past two weeks. I definitely want to because I enjoy it, but with my children out of school, I might not get much quiet time on the computer.
You may have noticed that I posted a blog entry while I was away. I used the scheduling option on blogger, about the most advanced thing I've managed to do with the blogger platform so far. (I am pretty rubbish and not very interested in computer stuff really.) I don't like being decietful, but I was told that you shouldn't publicly advertise the fact that you are away. So, sorry guys for being a faker.
Just one sewing thought. I doubt I will have the chance to do any sewing in the month of August, but if I do, I will switch to Autumn clothes. Is everyone else also switching?
