Oh What a Difference the Right Fabric Makes!

Burda Style Magazine 121 from the September 2010 edition
Now, I know there are a lot of people who would sniff at this pattern because it is so easy and so bland.  But not me, the weather is turning, and I am suddenly short of long sleeved t-shirts.  I certainly could not draft one for myself.  I am not very good yet at figuring out which fabric will suit which pattern.  The fabric I used was a slub rayon from Fabric.com.  I had a Boden t-shirt a few years ago out of slubbed cotton, and I liked the fabric a lot.  This fabric I am not wild about.  The colour looks artificial somehow when you see it in person.  Sadly, I have another piece of this stuff in cerise. Maybe if I pick a pattern that is more flow-y it will work out better.

Anyway, I think you can see for yourself that this fabric is a little soft and thin for this pattern.

Since I had already traced off the pattern, the most time consuming element of this project, I decided to try again with some cheap, but beefy white cotton jersey I had.  I think this is much better, though this jersey doesn't have much stretch.

So, what did I learn?  Use heavier fabrics for more fitted garments and thinner fabrics for more voluminous garments.  Dho!

Comments about the pattern:  It was easy.  Really, really easy to sew up.  If I were to come across a beautiful thin sweater knit, I would be tempted to sew it up using this fool-proof pattern.  Wouldn't it look just great in a thick-ish wool jersey?  Like maybe this one from Gorgeousfabrics.com.

Alas, I'll keep sewing down my stash of cheap, oddball pieces, and keep learning for now. Besides, Christmas is just around the corner, and I need to start saving!
