Star Awards 2009

It was "ajollyaffair" with Joanne Peh walking away with the coveted title of "Best Actress" at last night's annual Star Awards, giving the Walking Nonya Kueh no chance of commenting on her dress.

Unlike in Hong Kong or Taiwan, the tv industry here is so compact and "monopolised" that the faces you see on most programme shows have recurring hosts and actors, probably a reason why there wasn't the grandeur of any typical red carpet shows yesterday. Even if there were, it will probably be quite painful to watch, if what they wore last night were their best.

There was nothing really stunning about the outfits these celebrities were wearing, probably "best-dressed" were Quan Yi Feng in her last outfit and Joanne Peh in her first outfit (why in the world did she change?), and they got into the list just because their dresses were not informally short, like other skanks.

Host of the night, Quan Yi Feng and Guo Liang in forefront.

Best Actress and Best Actor winners

The men were all clad in classic 3-piece suit, and Chen Han Wei shone the brightest with his contrastingly piped shirt and white semi-formal shoes. There was this particular Taiwanese star, Ethan Ruan Jin Tian, who we thought really rocked the outfit in a greyish-blue suit.

Best Actor spotted with Special Award winner, Huang Biren

Over to hairstyles, thick bangs were seen all over the ladies crop, with Queen of Caldecott Hill, Fann Wong, and Hong Kong hottest star, Myoli Wu, both spotted in similar hairdos.

Belinda wins best programme host for info-ed, and worst-dressed Felicia Chin gets into top 10.

As for worst-dressed...

It has got to be Felicia Chin and Gurmit Singh (this is not a joke), it's really atrocious.

New Urban Male, Singapore [NUMtee edition]

None of us here are fans of the shapeless crew-neck tees, which was why we really didn't understand all the rave about NUM (New Urban Male for short, a brand that advocates singlets, beach shorts, and flip flops), until we saw their Lust Supper series, containing thought-provoking words like "Fook Yew", "Suk Mi Naw Seafood", "Wan Hump Mee", and "Ji Bai Steamboat Buffet", with obvious pun-intended that only the light-hearted locals would understand.

The Lust Supper,
(Hainanese Chicken Rice and Bak Kut Teh are famous local dishes)

The brand infamous for their tanned and sporty 235 guys (sales assistance), not only prints tongue-in-cheek lines on their housebrand of NUMtees, but also make them so close-to-our-hearts with their "Ang Mo Kio", "Yishun", "Holland Village" estate party tank, that makes it hard to not take a second look.

Didn't we tell you that only the locals would get it?

Politics, arts, and lifestyle, are all being translated into wearable items, almost like the designer's way of expressing his views about our society on his cotton canvases.
Even the hit musical Avenue Q's provocative tagline like "the Internet is for Porn" cannot escape from Shenzi Chua's creative clutches.

Oh, and because of NUM (well actually Tuky Tuky), I started to own my very first pair of flip flops! The experience with one of the 235 guys was indeed amazing. He was friendly, patient and could provide some style advice (not like I really need one, but it's always good to hear what others really think, especially in my less-exposed realm of toe-exposing rubbery flip-flops).
And if you ask me, I really think that the people behind New Urban Male has done an excellent job in branding NUM in every aspect of their label.

Matthew Williamson for H&M collection part 1 [Out in stores]

The British designer brought his signature vibrant-colored abstract flora prints into the collaboration. Beachy, relax, and peacock-inspired, the collection seemed very well put together with distinct style from the designer, setting apart from previous collaborations by V&R and Stella McCartney. Can't wait for part 2 to be out in May because Daria Werbowy just looks so hot in the yellow silk tunic (not spotted in the part 1 collection)

Celebrate Mother Nature: Happy Earth Day!

It’s Earth Day: Time to celebrate all the richness Mother Earth has to offer, while doing our part in protecting it. We all know that when something is forced upon us, the likelihood that we’ll participate is slim to none, but here are some fun facts about this phenomenal movement that might get you to think twice:
- Founded by a Wisconsin Senator, Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and had 20 million Americans participating.

- By recycling one aluminum can, you can save enough energy to watch 3 hours of TV
- If every newspaper were recycled, 250,000,000 trees would be saved

Still not motivated? Perhaps because you may feel that participating involves a lot of added time to your already hectic schedule; however here are some quick, easy and fun tips on how you, too, can “go green”
At home:
1) Carpool to work- not only do you save money on gas but you also enjoy the company of others all in the name of goodwill! And if possible, walk! It’s great for your body, mind and spirit.
2) Turn off anything you are not using including computers, lights, etc.
3) Plant a tree in your backyard! While your property value increases, greenhouse gases decrease!
At work:
1) Eliminate unnecessary photocopying.
2) Encourage e-mailing instead of using paper.
As a consumer:
Shop online instead of driving to your nearest store! With so many great discounts to choose from it’s a win-win situation. Roaman’s for example, the fashion leader for plus-size women is offering a 50% off all Knit tops, tees and tunics- a great sale that usually happens only twice a year! Such huge savings during these hard economic times is a nice relief! So sit back- enjoy the savings and shop online!

With so much to do’s in our schedule, wouldn’t it be nice today to mark off the box titled “make a difference on Earth Day?” You can do it and the earth will thank you!

More to Love: The new face of "The Bachelor"

Reality TV is about to get real! A new show is hitting the screen that is about to take The Bachelor’s avid audience by storm by introducing “More to Love”. From the executive producers of The Bachelor, “More To Love” is based on the same concept of one bachelor choosing his true love from a selection of 25 single women. The main difference however, is that the contestants are on the more robust side of the scale.

Up until this point, “The Bachelor” has been nothing short of a Hollywood story- filled with contestants who are skinny, beautiful and flawless and who always get what they want. Unfortunately, the real dating scene is much more challenging than reality TV would like us to believe- the average Joe is not always tall, dark and handsome and the average Jane is usually more than a size 0. Well, it’s time to root for all the Mr. Joes and Ms. Janes out there! We at Roaman’s are especially excited about the show and look forward to its premiere! It’s about time beautiful, bold and confident women who are more than a size 0 receive the national attention they deserve.

Let’s just hope that once he chooses his leading lady, that he doesn’t have a change of ‘contestant’ heart.

Tell us what you think about the up and coming “More to Love”
