For Ages 4 and Up (A Solo Exhibition by Aiman Hakim)

In his first solo exhibition, Aiman explores the ‘absurd’ notion of self-individuation, in a culture where communal ideologies still dominate. His works involve the repeated use of iconic representations of ‘a perfect man’ in different stages of his life - various Ken dolls that have been generated over the years, ranging from vintage to the very recent. A personal friend of ours, Aiman has always been in love with his oil paints and canvases. Ages 4 and up marks a milestone in Aiman's artistic vision and identifies with his perseverance for leaving the corporate world to do what he truly is passionate about - Art.
This is an invitation to all Style Damsel readers to catch the artist's interpretation of an innocent world from the eyes of a child.

Jumping on the Bandwagon

Everyone raves about Hotpatterns' Weekender Sunshine Top (HP1071). It's been around a few years now, and this is my first time trying to make it. It's very easy to sew. Though, I must admit that I referenced Off The Cuff's tutorial. The step by step pictures made it a snap.

Like most people, my body is not in perfect proportion. After two babies, even less so. My frame is several sizes smaller than my girth. :-(
So I went ahead and cut a size 12 pattern, which is what I should be according to my shoulders, center back length and underbust measurement. Since my waist is larger, I pinned the pattern about an inch away from the fold line. I figured that the extra material in the folds would allow for my waist and hips. It did. So that was a simple and pretty successful adjustment. Looking at the picture, I think I might have even added a little too much extra fabric. Next time, and I do plan to make this again in a couple more colours - it's so flattering and comfortable, I might just add a half an inch.

Holiday Clothes

I just made my littlest daughter Oliver + S's Bubble Dress. I had some left over material from the project and was able to also make my eldest daughter a flouncy skirt. Everyone is pleased as punch including me.

There are a couple of good flouncy skirt tutorials over at House on the Hill and the Polka Dot Chair. If you sew a little, you probably don't actually need any directions, but it is always nice to take inspiration from other people.

The skirt was a simple thing, embellished with ric-rac and gingham binding tape.

The dress was not too difficult to sew, but it was not as easy as Oliver + S's Tea Party Dress. Attaching the skirt to the bodice and keeping the back, bodice placket looking nice was a challenge. In the end I just worked that bit together by hand.

My eldest daughter initially didn't want a Bubble Dress, but now that she sees her sister's, she says she likes the look of it. So it looks like I will have a second chance to master the placket!

Next on my list is a t-shirt for me, before summer is over!

Baby Bunting

Our neighbours have just had a baby girl. I have made this decorative bunting as a new baby gift, and now I am crossing my fingers and hoping that it matches their nursery decor. I figure a pink-motif should be pretty safe.

It was lots of fun and involved minimal sewing. I only sewed a random white button onto the bottom of each triangle as decoration and to help weigh it down. I used the Harrington font from my Apple Pages as a template for Sienna's name.

Now both of my little girls would like some bunting for their rooms. So I guess I have plenty to keep me busy next week!

Trend Advice by Veronica

Hello, my name is Veronica and I work for Roaman's. While on vacation recently I wore a long blue maxi dress in Cabo, Mexico and it’s now my favorite dress! I got so many compliments on it and it was so easy to wear. I could throw on over my bathing suit or wear it to dinner. It was cool for the hot weather and forgiving. I noticed that it’s a real hot trend for this spring and summer so I plan on buying a few more for myself. It’s free flowing and effortless style makes it so easy to look good at any size or shape. I love my maxi so much that I decided to incorporate it into our dress assortment for Roaman's. I hope you can find some fun maxi dresses on our website and love it as much as I love mine!

Linen Tote Bag

The skiptomylou blog inspired me to make this tote bag for a friend's birthday this weekend. I added some patch-work to the front and a contrasting pocket to the lining inside. The bag is made from neutral coloured linen I got at IKEA, and is lined with quilting cotton inside.

I am pleased with it, and I think it is the perfect sort of birthday gift for another Mum in the neighbourhood. Not cheap and cheesy, not expensive and pretentious. Instead unique and useful without being too personal either.

The 90 square-meter retail space, located on the third floor of the newly opened Orchard Central, will open its doors in mid August. (It's about time, isn't it?) The store will showcase Dr. Martens full collection of men’s and women's footwear available each season, as well as sneak previews of upcoming styles.

The opening of the concept store here symbolises a new beginning and hails the return of an icon. Fans of Dr. Martens can look forward to a fun-filled experience.”

Richly steeped in British heritage and tradition, the Dr. Martens concept store will present customers with a unique atmosphere and shopping experience. The exterior design of the shop, modelled after the Neal Street flagship store in London (see image below), sports a truly British street look. Adding to the ambiance is the distinct interior décor that uses furnishings closely related to English street culture. Expect to see Chesterfield sofas with deep-buttoned backrests, white brick walls and even a customised Vespa!
