Free Drawing for ‘THE OPEN: Golf’s Oldest Major’

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP IS returning to St. Andrews this year, which also happens to be the 150th anniversary of golf’s oldest major. I have a special treat for you: a free drawing for a 304-page photographic history of the ancient golf championship.

Titled THE OPEN: Golf’s Oldest Major and published by Rizzoli, the book features black and white and color photographs from Getty Images. The rather sparse text is by Donald Steel, with a foreword by Arnold Palmer and afterword by Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A. This hardcover measures 12.3 x 9.4 x 1.4 inches and weighs 4.8 pounds. It’s hefty and gorgeous, a prized coffee table or sports den book for any armchair golf historian. (I love my review copy. I am not giving it up. The publisher is making another copy available for the drawing.)

Here are a couple of excerpts from the publisher’s news release:
THE OPEN: Golf’s Oldest Major revisits the history of the fourteen legendary links courses along the spectacular British coastline on which The Open has been played, with a chapter dedicated to each course highlighting the famous moments of victory, defeat, partnership, competition, and tradition that have come to define them.

The book brings together the classic images of the sport’s icons—from early stars such as Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones, and masters like Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, to the exceptional talents of today, Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington.
OK, I must add three names not mentioned in the above publisher copy: Harry Vardon, Peter Thomson and Tom Watson. Because those three remarkable champions won the Claret Jug 16 times. (Vardon, 6; Thomson, 5; and Watson, 5.)

WANT TO GET IN ON THIS?

How to enter this free drawing: Just email your name and mailing address to armchairgolfer@gmail.com. I’ll blind draw the winner in a couple of weeks during the championship. Good luck!

Obee Designs for a Good Cause....

This morning I got a visit from one of my blogging friends Gail from Obee Designs. As always she left me a very sweet comment. Being that I haven't visited her in a while, I went over to pay her a visit. Like always, she had some of the most amazing post that I had a joy catching up on. As I was scrolling down her blog, I notice in her sidebar this T-Shirt shown above. I knew in an instant that it was another beautiful creation of her daughter Meghan. Just above the T-shirt, I notice this youtube news clip. So I watched it. As I was watching it tears began to roll down my face. I thought it was just the most heart warming story. A young lady using her beautiful art in honor of both grandfathers to spread awareness of heart disease.

Meghan created Obee designs with her mom Gail in honor of both of her grand fathers she lost to heart disease. She turned her tragic loss into something positive by creating beautiful t-shirt and jewelry to spread awareness. A portion of the proceeds goes to The American Heart Association. Her beautiful necklaces can be customized and a picture of a loved one you loss can be included into the back of the necklace. Not only is it for loved ones loss but also for loved ones gained. You can put a picture of a baby, child or spouse or even your pet. Whatever you choose, just knowing that her lovely creations are to help bring awareness to heart disease is enough for me.

Meghan's art work has been successful. She has already raised hundreds of dollars for The American Heart Association. How awesome is that! I'm loving her designs. Now Meghan is working on her new T-shirt line titled "Near and Dear T Shirts" I really love the heart with the wings! Beautiful T-shirt Meghan! I love to see young people do something positive. So I ask that you please check out the Obee Design Etsy shop, her youtube link and Gail's blog to get more information about Obee design. Congratulations Meghan, I know both of your grandfather's are proud of you! Keep up the good work! To see the video in full size, double click on the video.

Style Me Pretty

Nowadays people aren't doing the traditional wedding cakes we're use to. You know, the all white with flowers or fruit everywhere. I like the idea of making your cake just the way you like in whatever color or style you choose.Although I'm not against the all white cake, a little color wouldn't hurt. This little cake is adorable. I love the color and the flowers cascading down the front of the cake. very cute!

The Runway Sniper #65

Below: Dries Van Noten's take on Skinhead and mod styles for his Spring Summer 2011 Menswear collection... The looks border on grunge and refined mens tailoring...

Below: Snow washed denim are the rage in this new collection. It's everywhere in denim vests, jackets, jeans and shirts...

Below: There is somewhat a sense of refinement contrasted against the hard edge 'grunge' looking denim...

Below: Besides acid wash, hand painted watercolour blotches by a couture atelier reinforces Dries Van Noten's refined aesthetics and artisanal crafting. Never just some 'rumble and tumble' uncouth treatments...even for 'Jackson Pollock lookalike' splatter...

Below: Love the grey cardigan with the untreated tan leather belt on the side...

Below: Skinheads in Mr Dries mind looked less 'hard edge' and more 'polished'... double breasted jackets are often contrasted with shorts and boots...

Below: I really like the tweed like material on this suit. It's actually a nylon/cotton blend that's lighter...

Below: Club 21 buyers' insider look from the Dries Van Noten showroom... one of them trying on the snow washed denim shirt... yay or nay? Looking promising to me...

Below: Window pane checks worthy of savile row are also key accents to the collection...

Below: Knotted slim belt look with that gorgeous 'tweed' looking fabric...

Below: Fans of scarves can have an 'orgasm' now...:-P

Dries Van Noten Spring Summer 2011 Menswear

Do I ever see Mr Dries Van Noten into grunge, skin heads and fifties mod style? Highly unlikely, unless some mid life crisis takes over and one decides he wants to shave his head and ride a Harley at age 52.

Well, in fashion, you never say never. That is exactly what Mr Dries Van Noten send out for his Spring Summer 2011 Menswear runway... snow wash denim, paint splatter patterns (watercolour blotches hand-painted by a couture atelier in Lake Como), biker/military style boots and closely shaved heads. I guess being always a 'romantic' at heart (evident in his collections' refined flair and ethnic inspired fame), Dries makes his interpretation of 'grunge' and 'rough', albeit in a very 'gentlemenly' way. The snow washed denim pieces often juxtaposed with classic tailoring (think double breasted jackets and tailored shorts), window pane checks (worthy of savile row) and tactile choice of tweed-like fabrics (which is actually nylon/cotton blend), Dries Van Noten's grunge man is never a slop. He's a refined skinhead who embraces his softer side and can be as chivalrous as any cultured man does.

I am not entirely convinced about this direction of Dries Van Noten. But as in all his collections, it's the details that matters. The looks may be half way between hard edge and refinement, some of the accessories such as those slim untreated tan leather belts, tan coloured bags and charming fabrics will still beckon out to fans any day. The snow washed denim shirt, as does the window pane checks scarves, are suddenly looking promising afterall (all those showroom shots by Club 21's buyers brings new light to the collection!).

The Material Boy #399

Below: Love these pockets squares of London Maps and Polka Dots from Paul Smith... Quirky and fun:-)

Below: Examples of how pocket squares work wonders on a simple blazer. Imagine this gentlemen with his polka dot pocket square... the look will somehow lose out on some charm and colour...

Below: The lace edging adds focal point to his otherwise plain denim blazer... Pocket square works wonders!

Paul Smith 'Polka Dots' And 'London Map' Pocket Squares

I deemed the pocket square one of the most inexpensive and effective male accessory when it comes to dressing up. Adding colour, personality and perhaps some functionality (to offer to any damsels in distress during emergencies...the fairer gender will appreciate this, trust me:-P), this little piece of silk fabric does amazing wonders to a man's debonair charm. I know I like my pocket squares colourful and quirky. Something contrasting will be most ideal. A plain suit jacket simply comes alive when colours and patterns start to peek playfully out of that front pocket. It's a talking point, it's a focal point, it's a style defining accessory without all the frills.

Paul Smith being the 'English dandy' brand with all its eccentric English charm and humour have come up with some must-have pocket squares. Varying sized Polka dots, free spirited sketches of London Maps, they are playful and colourful for any day. Me want!

Kenny Perry, Friend of Coal Miners

I’VE NEVER MET KENNY PERRY, so my impressions of him are from a distance. But I think of Kenny as a good guy, or a “good ol’ boy” as he might be referred to in his hometown of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and around Franklin, his current residence in the Bluegrass State. I just don’t get the feeling that Perry has a false bone in his body, which is endearing but has also irked folks at times.

James Kenneth Perry can play golf with the best players in the world. Otherwise he comes across as a pretty regular fella and family man, the kind of guy that has worked behind the counter at his Country Creek Golf Course without customers knowing it. I became a bigger Kenny Perry fan when he stuck to his schedule in 2008 and made the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He didn’t attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open. He didn’t enter the British Open. He did take serious heat.

So this week’s story about Perry is no surprise to me. Kenny will donate $2,000 for every birdie he makes at the inaugural Greenbrier Classic later this summer to the 29 families that lost loved ones in the recent West Virginia mining disaster.

“Kenny is from Kentucky, not far away,” said Greenbrier Resort chairman Jim Justice at Roanoke.com, “and he certainly knows the miners, how dedicated they are and what immense work they do. It’s a great gesture on Kenny’s part and we’re very proud to be a part of that.”

Hope your putter’s hot, Kenny.

Gone to Costa Rica, see you again soon!

Arenal Lake From Mirador Lodge
Arenal Volcano seen from Monteverde National Park, picture lifted from http://www.arenal.net/photo-gallery.htm

I am off to my littlest sister's wedding early tomorrow morning.  I will miss my little girls tremendously and now wonder what I was thinking by deciding to go for 8 days!!!

I will also miss reading everyone's blogs.  At this point, I am pretty much addicted.  I would certainly get much more of my own sewing done, if I wasn't so busy nosing around to see what everyone else is working on!  I don't know if there is much in the way of fabric/tela shopping in Costa Rica these days or not.  When I was a kid 25 years ago, a lot of folks sewed their own clothes.  The place has changed dramatically since then, and now resembles Southern California.  At least, this is what I am told.  (I have never been further south than Santa Barbara in CA.)

Just a quick comment on my linen, drawstring trousers with the wonky pockets.  I took one pocket off in order to match it up with the other then and realised that I quite liked the trousers with one pocket.  I decided it looked rather jaunty in a good way.  So thanks to all of you who suggested that the asymmetry of the pockets was some how good or at least passable.  It definitely made me think I could get away with one pocket!

Emma Pei in Editorial for L'Officiel China, July 2010

Emma Pei has been keeping a fairly low profile since the beginning of the year. I think she is absolutely gorgeous and am ecstatic to see her back with a great new editorial in the July 2010 issue of L'Officiel China.
